Acreage assessment legislation records, [ca.1972-1990].

A primary duty of the Forestry Commission is to "recommend to the legislature such legislation as may be needed further to protect, conserve, increase, or to make available or useful the timber and forests and other natural resources of Alabama..." (Ala. Code, 9-3-4-[8] [1975]). To further promote forestry and fire protection, the Forestry Commission has sought and gained passage of two acts relating to a per acre assessment of forest land for each county with funds being matched by the state and used for forestry services. This series consists of records creating during the process of passage of the two acreage assessment bills. Typical records located in these files include copies of the acts, newspaper clippings, public notices of hearings, copies of the bill, voting records, requests for absentee ballots, and related correspondence.
